Thanks to the beautiful weather, the Washington and Lee baseball team attracted a large crowd to Cap'n Dick Smith Field both days this weekend, many of the men shirtless following the popular rule of spring term "Sun's out, guns out".

Unfortunately, they lost both games on Saturday to Virginia Wesleyan before a quick turnaround Sunday's victory in the double-header against Westminster (Pa.).

W&L lost 11-5 in game one and 5-2 in the second game against Virginia Wesleyan. Wesleyan (9-4, 2-0 ODAC) was aggressive on the base paths, going 17 of 18 in stolen base attempts in the two games.

Sophomore outfielder Anthony Cardona led W&L at the plate in the first game, going 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a dinger and three ribeyes, RBI to the non-pros. First-year outfielder Mike Decembrino added one hit in two at-bats with a run scored and a ribeye.

Junior Chuck Davidson took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits. He walked two and struck out two in six innings.

Said Senior Byron Pester, "Virginia Wesleyan is always one of the best teams in the league so we were ready to play against them, but we just didn't perform as well as we could have in any part of our game. To win against good teams like that, we will have to play better, but we know we are capable of doing that."

In the second game, junior catcher Will Lewis led W&L, going 2-for-4 at the plate, while junior shortstop John Ditore also went 2-for-4 and senior second baseman Byron Peyster added 2 hits in five at-bats with a run scored. Senior righthander Brendan Clark took the loss for the Generals after allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks with two punchouts in five innings of work.

Sunday, the Generals improved to 8-3 on the season with a double-header sweep of Westminster, who appeared to be bush league. W&L won the first game, 5-4, in eight innings and defeated Westminster, 7-2, in the second game.

"It was nice to get to come back and win two games against Westminster, who was a solid team and could have caught us at a down time, especially with the injuries to two of our best players (Terrence and Hunter)," said Peyster, referring to the injuries to senior center fielder Terrence McKelvey and first baseman Hunter Serenbetz.
