Going to Destin, Fla. for spring break has become an integral part of freshman year for many W&L students.
Located on Florida's Emerald Coast, Destin's houses and condominiums make the perfect place for W&L students to relocate for a week.
"I think I'm going to Destin with some friends, or at least somewhere in Florida," freshman Mandy Burns said. "It's a place we can drive, and a fun tradition that older people have told us about," Burns said.
But it's not just freshmen who look to Destin for a spring break getaway.
Sophomore Tino Tovo said that he and some fraternity brothers are heading to Destin because "it's a chill-out place with enough girls willing to rock out and have fun." Tovo has expectations for spring break that are probably shared by many W&L students. "I hope to go out every night and meet lovely girls and rest on the beach," Tovo said.
Although many W&L students travel to exotic locations for spring term, some use it as a time to catch up. Senior Jared Harrison said that he will use the break as an opportunity to look for an apartment to live in next year.
"I'll be planning my post-graduate life," Harrison said.
Freshman Tara Rubenstein said that she may spend her break visiting friends at other schools. "My best friends play lacrosse at Princeton and Trinity, so I may be a good friend and support [them]," Rubenstein said.
Whatever students have planned, spring break is in the minds of many W&L students, and acts as a motivator to pull them through winter term.
For everyone, spring break marks the end of the hard work and bad weather of winter term. It is the first taste of the warm weather and laid-back lifestyle of spring at W&L. Most students see it as a much needed break from Lexington and the struggles of college life.
"I'll be ready to get away and do nothing," Burns said. "It'll be a really great time."
